Could I have been…misdiagnosed? What should I do?
thoughtless Asked: Could I have been…misdiagnosed? What should I do?
I struggled thinking of the word used to describe my situation but here it is.About a month ago, I was sent to the adolescent section of the local Mental Health Facility.I was sent there because I was exhibiting a severe, manic mood and I was later diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and a variety of other mental illnesses.
On the list, they mentioned that I had Borderline and Schizoid features. One of the counselors explained the two disorders a bit but not in depth. They said I was not diagnosed with the disorders associated with those titles, I just have a few of the symptoms. However, I'm not so sure I have as much Schizoid as I am diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. On the other end of the spectrum, I am a bit concerned that I may have Borderline Personality Disorder and I feel as though my testing during my manic mood altered the true state to some of the answers I gave as far as feelings went.During that period of time, I felt elated and I described what I was currently feeling…not long term feelings and thoughts. At other points during my test, you could say I was absolutely incoherent because I was jumpy and trying to shush up the voices I was hearing.
I'm going back in October to see the psychiatrist to see how my medication is working (it's working fine) but should I mention to my psychiatrist this concern about having a possible personality disorder?I wouldn't push this if I didn't feel like it was a problem but I won't diagnose myself.
Thanks.

Act like you have an file a law suit lol sounds good to me!!!
You should absolutely mention any symptoms you are experiencing or concerns about your diagnoses, but it isn't particularly helpful to have prepared a diagnosis for yourself. Trust that they understand your symptoms and have the necessary expertise.
It is extremely common for mental health workers to avoid treating people with borderline personality disorder. It is one of the most stigmatizing diagnoses you can get, even though virtually all people who get the diagnosis are women who were sexually abused, which is interesting how sexist this label is. I think wiki addressed that issue.
I would NOT address this issue when it is not clear what is wrong. I will add that the first psych diagnosis is right only 1/3 of the time. it isn't really science. If you do have borderline, that will come clear in therapy, later, and then you can deal with the abuse from mental health professionals. . .lmean you can ask them to "help" you.I got that label for awhile, and it turned out the MEDS were causing my behavior problems. I didn't have those behavior problems until I was in my 30's, and you cannot suddenly develop a personality disorder at that age.The psychiatrists do not follow their own made up DSM.
If your manic mood was in response to a drug of some kind, including prescribed drug, that is akathisia, not mania. In mania, you get euphoria almost always, at least when you are young.Misdiagnosis is rampant!! You have to protect yourself from it. You describe yourself as elated,so you probably did have mania.
