Bipolar Disorder is a diagnosis recognized in the DSM text. However what do you consider a "serious mental illness?" ALL psych disorders can be considered serious but it does depend how it effects the individual. Some people live with psych disorders their entire life and lead normal lives while others need medications and therapy just to make it through the day.

ALL mental illness it just that-an illness. It's no different than someone with Diabetes or High Cholesterol. Society thinks of those with mental illnesses as "crazy" or "retarded" when it fact all mental illnesses need treatment, medications, hospitalization, etc just like any other illness.

Bipolar disorder can be a very serious entity to deal with.

First of all, you need to accept the fact that you do have this disorder.Then you need to accept the fact that you will require medication the rest of your life in order to treat it so that you will be in a stable mood state.

Once you have accepted it and are on medication, you will then be able to function in a way that people around you who have had no contact with you will not recognize you to have bipolar disorder, in fact if it is acknowledged by you that you have, they will be extremely surprised.

You need not tell others that do not know that you have bipolar disorder.

The main thing is that bipolar disorder can become a very serious state to be diagnosed with especially when treatment is not accepted by the one who is bipolar.
